MiniAjax — An Awesome Site

Web developers, check it out. My one complaint is that this is an awkward assortment of things ranging from little JavaScript snippets to free (GPL) apps to proprietary, expensive applications. But there are some very cool ones in there. (Psst! Heatmap is running on this site! It’s going to take a while to build up enough data worth sharing, but I’ll let you know when the time comes.) Some of the other ones are going to make their way into some projects I’m working on.

Today’s Deals

This week, Office Depot wins the award for best deals:

  • eMachines desktop and monitor combo. Athlon 3800, 1 GB RAM, 160GB disk, dual-layer CD/DVD-R, Vista Home Premium, and a 21.6″ LCD. Their website seems devoid of information on it, so I can’t figure out what I really want to know–the resolution on that monitor. But at $399.99 after rebates ($649.99 in store), it seems like a good deal any way you spin it.
  • If you’re more of a laptop person, they have a Toshiba laptop with a dual-core Athlon TK-53 (which means nothing to me), 120 GB disk, 17″ “TruBrite” widescreen monitor, and 2 GB (!) RAM. Typical dual-layer CD/DVD burner and Vista Home Premium. Integration 802.11b/g (but not a or N)…. $599.99 after rebates, $749.99 in store.
  • “Becker Traffic Assist GPS” with voice directions and a 3.5″ LCD (touchscreen). I’ve never even heard of Becker, but at $129.99 (after rebates: $199.99 in store), it seems like an incredible value.
  • 2GB CompactFlash card, $19.99 in store. I’ve been watching CF prices for a while now that I have a CF camera, and this is definitely a good deal. The problem is that I’m not sure I need a 2GB card? Same price for a 2GB SD card.
  • Epson all-in-one machine (printer/copier/scanner/fax), $44.99. Includes an LCD so you can print right from digital media. As usual, price is after rebate
  • $649.99 ($799.99 in store) for a quad-core Intel (Q6600), 2GB RAM, 400 GB hard drive.
  • $6.99 for a 1GB USB thumbdrive. Those came down in price awfully quickly!
  • $27.99 for a 4GB (!) thumbdrive.

I really wish I could justify the purchase of a new computer, because that $400 desktop system is very tempting.

ISO: The Next Frontier?

In photography, there are a few key variables in determining exposure. The first is the aperture of the lens: basically, how much light is let in. Really serious (or rich) photographers carry around very “fast” lenses–they’re enormous and let in a ton of light. Notice the huge lenses that you see on the sidelines as sporting events, for example. (Err, not the length, but the width–these things are huge in both dimensions.) Of course, these lenses (we call them “fast” lenses, or lenses with wide apertures) are very heavy, and insanely expensive: for a really good one, you’d pay at least $1,000, and that’s pocket change compared to some lenses.

Another control is ISO sensitivity. Back in the days of film, some film was more sensitive to light than others. For example, ISO100 produces great pictures, but requires a lot of light. It’s superb for outdoor pictures on a sunny day. On the other hand, if you’re getting shots indoors, you might be at something like ISO1600. The problem is that, as you increase the sensitivity, you also increase the noise. ISO1600 will get decent shots indoors, but they’ll be grainy. (This is especially bad if you’re like me and tend to try to boost details in the shadows in Photoshop.)

The two come together to control the third important variable, shutter speed. In some cases, it doesn’t matter a ton. If it’s bright and sunny, and I’m taking a picture of a building, I really couldn’t care whether it’s 1/100th of a second or 1/4,000th of a second. And, if I’m using a tripod, it’s not uncommon to have shutter speeds lasting several seconds. But the problem is that, if the shutter speed is too low, you get a lot of blur. There are two reasons–the first is that people rarely hold still. I use 1/60 as a general rule of thumb: below that and you risk some blur if people are moving a lot. This is a really rough guess: I’ve gotten great portraits at 1/8, and sometimes 1/125 isn’t fast enough.

The bigger consideration, though, is camera shake, especially with longer zoom lenses. The rule of thumb there is 1/length. For example, shooting with a telephoto 200mm lens, it’s recommended that I shoot a 1/200 of a second or faster.

Putting it all into practice… Bill Clinton was speaking tonight at an event we went to. I have a 55-200mm telephoto lens, and tended to stay right around 200mm. I stayed at ISO1600; I can go to ISO3200 but it’s very grainy so I don’t use it. Unfortunately, though, my lens can’t go wider than f/5.6 at that length, which meant that the fastest I could get shots was around 1/60th of a second. At 200mm, this really was inadequate: most of the shots came out okay because I have a steady hand, but they’re not all that sharp. Example:

Autumn Colors

Granted, the subject isn’t that interesting, but every time I see that shot I took, I think, “Wow, that’s sharp!” Not so for the Clinton photo. If you view it in larger detail (click on it), its subtle blur becomes increasingly obvious.

There was a professional photographer about ten feet away from me. She was shooting a 70-200mm lens, which is a similar length to mine. But hers is an f/2.8 lens, which lets in twice as much light as mine does. So while I was getting 1/60 shutter speeds, she could have been getting 1/120. (Hers had Image Stabilization, too, but that’s a story for another day.)

The thing is, taking telephoto portraits indoors isn’t all that rare of a thing to do. To get good shots, you need to get that shutter speed up. There are two ways to do it, as you should now know: raise ISO or get a better lens. The problem is that getting a better lens will set me back $5,000 or so. And it’s an insanely heavy lens as well.

The other option is one that, until recently, wasn’t feasible: raise ISO some more. ISO1600 is good. You can do ISO3200, but it’s decent on only a few cameras. But I really have to give Nikon credit with their D3. It’ll go to ISO25600. Check out some samples. I’ve seen some higher-res images at ISO6400, and it’s just about perfect! Its ISO6400 rivals my ISO1600. The thing is, that’s a huge increase to be able to shoot at 6400 and have a perfectly usable image. It would have helped a lot with getting better shots.

I truly hope this is the direction camera makers go in now, and that Canon and Nikon get into an “ISO war” trying to outdo each other.

One may also wish to ask themselves, “Wait, what do I need ten machetes for?” (And, furthermore, “Is it legal to possess machetes on campus?,” which is a decided “Not at all” in my case.) But for those of you living where machetes are allowed, and who can come up with some reason for owning them, this is currently a steal!

Stolen Ideas, II

Hammacher Schlemmer has a second idea that’s eerily similar to something I’ve had in mind.

Granted, mine would be an order of magnitude (or two) more expensive, have a cell modem for enormous range, solar panels to aid it in flying for a long time, and an ultra-high res camera with a long zoom lens… 640×480 is pretty much a gimmick, especially when you can only store 26 of them. And a 7-minute battery life is gimmicky too. I want a high-quality lens and 8 good megapixels. And a 4GB flash drive or something.

Oh, and GPS. And WiFi. I want to be able to, on the computer, map out a path for it to fly over, and automatically ‘return home.) Granted, you’re far, far from the $200 price at that point. But it’s also seriously cool at that price.

Wow! It’s replaced Firefox on both Windows and Linux for me. (And it runs on OS X, too.) It’s actually built on Firefox, so I’ve got all my favorite extensions added in. I’m not going to do it the injustice of trying to describe it. Download it and spend five minutes with it. You’ll thank yourself.

Verizon Juke

(Link here). It sucks less than I expected. Our first reaction to seeing the commercial was, “That must be impossible for a left-handed person to use.” So when Kyle was given one to review, we called over a left-handed friend. Sure enough, it’s virtually impossible for him to use. There are some other problems: it comes in three colors, and Navy is the only one that’s not hideously ugly. The way you hold it closed (I’m not sure what you do when it’s closed; I couldn’t get it to do anything but it apparently has media features) is upside-down from how it opens. And when it’s open, there are two things on the back: the camera and the antenna. You cover both with your hand. The antenna has a big warning not to do that. But there’s no other way to hold it that’s not incredibly awkward. But otherwise, I was pretty impressed. Despite a tiny keyboard, I could dial fine. And despite a tiny screen, I could see the screen fine. The picture I took seemed to come out okay, once I figured out that it was all black because my hand was covering the lens.

Would I buy one? No way. But would I relentlessly mock someone who had one? Despite what I thought after seeing the commercials, no.

Being a Smart Millionaire

Like many people, I’d like to be extraordinarily wealthy some day. Between a string of business ideas that I’m convinced would make me fantastically wealthy, and the lottery which never seems to work out in my favor, I have lots of occasions to hope I’m rich.

Of course, as a millionaire, there are lots of extravagant purchases I’d like to make. But I think you can make them a lot less extravagant.

For example, I’m a nut about keeping my car really, really clean. It’d be nice to build a really nice auto garage, where I could do detailing, and maybe even hire a mechanic to keep up my cars. So why not buy a failing auto garage business somewhere, fix it up to millionaire-pet-project standards, and then put it in business? It might not be profitable, but it’ll at least defray the costs of running it just for your own use.

And what millionaire doesn’t own a limo or two? There are some seemingly-rare models for sale right now. So you pick them up, and start a limo company. You can make sure not to over-schedule them so that there’s always one available for your use, but when you’re not using them, they’re making you money. Again, it might take a long time to be profitable. But you view it like how I viewed the first hosting company I started: I wanted the server for myself, and if I could get people to subsidize the cost by buying space, great. It’d be great if I someday made a profit, but if I just ended up having use of a dedicated server on the cheap, that’s great too.

You can even work philanthropy in this model. Merrimack’s library is badly in need of a new building. I bet we can find a neighboring town that shares our need, too. So you build a really, really nice library somewhere, merge the two libraries, and donate it to the town. But, when you build the library, you build in a few spaces for a coffee shop and deli. And, as part of the donation, you own rights to put in retail shops there in perpetuity. Will you ever make enough to pay off the library? I doubt it. But getting a little income from a philanthropic donation? That’s nothing to complain about!

If you weren’t too picky about people using some of your properties, you could even apply this “semi-business, semi-personal toy” model to real estate. As a multi-millionaire, I’d love a few vacation homes. For example, this would be a great retreat /vacation home. But I’d only use it for a few weeks at a time. This‘d be awesome, too. Add some oceanfront property and maybe a winter retreat in a tropical location. But a lot of them you won’t live in for more than a few weeks at a time. So you file a corporation, have it own your vacation homes, and rent them out most of the time. Of course, you keep your personal property in your main home. And the others are just awesome vacation homes. And when you’re not using them (which is most of the time!) you’re renting them out, paying off at least the costs of maintaining the homes and paying their tax bills. And, ideally, making owning them a little less expensive.

Granted, I don’t quite have the money to buy a slew of vacation properties, or start a limo company, or buy a private room in Internap’s Boston data center. But if I do, you can bet that I’ll be gaming my purchases to try to make me a little money, too.

Homes to Consider

Today’s real estate market is in a slump. What this means, clearly, is that you should be buying.

If you’re willing to live in the middle of nowhere, here are a few very interesting ideas for homes:

  • $320,000 buys this ~3,000 sq. ft. building, a former railroad station. With just a tiny bit of work, it would be a nice home. Check out the living-room-to-be; mount an LCD TV right over the fireplace and put down carpeting over most of the floor (except for right by the fireplace). There’s a bookcase off to the right, although I’d paint it white. Breakfast nook anyone? Just put down a carpet. This view is pretty inviting, too. (And check out the palm trees outside: it’s Georgia, after all.)
  • If you’re more of an athlete, how about this school in Kansas? $325,000 buys you 24,500 square feet on 5 acres. The gym looks ready to use. Read “17 classrooms” as “17 palatial bedrooms” after you renovate them a bit. (Carpet + less-hideous ceiling + ditch the fluorescent lights.) And tell me that library wouldn’t make a nice home theater.
  • This place in Missouri is ridiculously nice. Tell me the third picture isn’t what you want to see as you walk home. It sets high expectations for what’s inside, but it’s even nicer than you might expect.
  • This old Montana bank is dirt cheap. 6,200 square feet for $140,000. I’d want to totally gut the interior, and the location is probably not desirable, but still… Oh, and put a nice fence up on the roof for safety, and then you have a pretty sweet ‘outdoor’ area. And it has a vault!
  • This place is totally undesirable but ohhh so cheap. It looks like it’s ready to fall down, and the power substation in the front yard destroys whatever value the place may have had. The good news is you may never lose power.
  • Cheap place in Indiana with an associated business.
  • This building is butt-ugly but is situated on a nice dam. I want to live here!
  • Whoa! 40,000 square feet of amazing office space? Might make a nice home.

Granted, you’d be an idiot to buy any of these places without looking carefully into all the costs and zoning laws, and I’m not sure any are in good locations.
