Long Shot

If I were to offer a used Canon Rebel 300D digital camera, with battery but no lens, for $250, would anyone bite? (Review of the model here.) I don’t currently have it, but I’d guarantee it to be in working order. (In other words, I’d be taking the liability on purchasing it.) Or $275 with lens.

The reason I ask is that this is a very good deal, but I only want the 10D. I’d love to let someone else benefit from the good deal along with me.

N.B.: This is not a binding offer, just a solicitation of interest. I may very well not purchase this, and the auction ends in 3.5 hours.

N.B. 2: This offer really only applies to people I know…

  1. What would you recommend lens-wise? While I’d love lots of L glass, I don’t want to spend more than $150 or so, and I’m pretty fond of zoom.

The 35-80mm lens is really slow and doesn’t have great reviews. (One review mentions that its innards feel like they’re made of cardboard.) Might be fun at first, but I like wide and I like fast. (No ‘your mom’ jokes!)

Besides the 50mm f/1.8 (prime and long), I have on my radar two Sigmas — an 18-50mm for $109 and a 28-70 (f/2.8 – 4.0) for $129. Any advice? I’ve got that 1.6x multiplier working against me, so the 18-50 is tempting, but it’s f/3.5 – 5.6… (There’s one out of my price range that’s at f/2.8 across the whole range.)

    Thoughts?

  2. Hmm… It’s a bit harder to find zoom lenses on the cheap than primes. I was just looking at some Sigmas on eBay (specifically, a 70-200mm/f2.8) and they seemed to have some good deals. I don’t know of anything in the wider range off the top of my head; I’d just check PopPhoto & c. reviews.

I thought about the 300D, but I’m not sure what I want to do. I desperately need to upgrade the 60GB drive in the machine I’m converting into a media center, so a few 500GB drives may take priority. 😉

  3. I’d sort of built up a supply of radios for my ‘buy and resell’ operation, so I just listed most of them to let my bank account recover. I think I’ll put off a lens purchase until then… The ‘stock’ lens will do for a couple weeks.

The way I justified the cameras to myself, BTW, was to subtract what I could get if I sold my current camera… I’ll probably postpone that until I get a couple lenses, though, as I really like the long zoom it has. (~370mm equivalent, although I can take a bit of a reduction…)
