Cheney Speaks In Favor of Gay Marriage

The Washington Post today has an article about Dick Cheney’s support for gay marriage. The article goes on to say that this “appears to place him to the left of President Obama,” who seems to have angered many by stating that he opposes gay marriage but supports civil unions.

The more I hear about gay marriage, the more bothered I become: why would anyone oppose it? Yes, some religions consider homosexuality an “abomination.” No, the overwhelming majority of Americans don’t wish to marry someone of the same sex. But, in my mind, none of that amounts to a reason to try to use the law to preclude same-sex marriage.

  1. Very fitting lyrics from a song:

We’re just normal people exploring our minds
We don’t go around here putting poison in wine
But we enjoy what we like which is not always right
People are intricate, people aren’t swines
Let’s screw the rules up and rely on our minds

  2. Some people believe that if they don’t speak out against ssomething that will be taken as support. The other thing is that they tie marriage and sex too closely together. Gay sex grosses me out. But then so does sex between some men and some women. It grosses me out in different ways though. I’m willing to accept sex between ugly people as a matter of taste. Gay sex seems just plain wrong. Yes I know officially it is not “sick” or what not but I’m not sold on that. On the other hand people are that way and they do fall in love. I’m not ready to keep rights of marriage from them. The gay people I know are good decent people (well there is that one little thing 🙂 ) and I know they care deeply for their partners. It’s not about sex – it’s about a committed caring/loving relationship between two people. So I want them to have benefits. I would rather they not call it marriage but I can live with it. It doesn’t hurt me or my marriage.
