{"id":960,"date":"2008-08-09T14:45:51","date_gmt":"2008-08-09T18:45:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.n1zyy.com\/n1zyy\/?p=960"},"modified":"2008-08-09T14:45:51","modified_gmt":"2008-08-09T18:45:51","slug":"merrimacks-dam-cam","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.n1zyy.com\/n1zyy\/2008\/08\/09\/merrimacks-dam-cam\/","title":{"rendered":"Merrimack&#8217;s Dam Cam"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I never really gave it much thought, but there&#8217;s a big dam in Merrimack, next to our central fire station, on the Souhegan River.<\/p>\n<p>But it apparently needed a lot of work, and people realized that it serves <em>no<\/em> benefit, and then people like NOAA (who I frequently forget is the National <i>Oceanic<\/i> and Atmospheric Administration) pointed out that, from an ecological standpoint, it was doing more harm than good, by keeping fish from swimming upstream and the like.<\/p>\n<p>So instead of spending the money to repair it, it was decided to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nmfs.noaa.gov\/habitat\/restoration\/projects_programs\/crp\/damcam.html\">take it out<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, this would be a really boring blog post if that was all. But they set up a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.earthcam.net\/users2\/interface.php?i=0&#038;id=2015&#038;projectid=1308&#038;clientid=951&#038;tab=default\">webcam<\/a> trained on the dam. Unlike normal 640&#215;480 &#8216;video&#8217; feeds, this one is a decent camera (Canon PowerShot, from the EXIF data), snapping a photo every 15 minutes. (Jump from, say, August 1st to today to see the difference.) And in between, you can see the work being done.
