With 8% free space (really good for this drive!), a defrag doesn&#8217;t get a lot accomplished. The small files are reassembled, but none of the big ones.\u00a0 There&#8217;s not enough room to piece together the paging file.<\/p>\n<p>So here&#8217;s how I, a definite OCD-sufferer, am cleaning up my Windows machine:<\/p>\n<ul>\n    <li>Create a desktop folder, &#8220;Crap,&#8221; and drag everything on the desktop into it, except for things that I know should definitely stay.<\/li>\n    <li>Plug in external 500GB hard drive.<\/li>\n    <li>Move the Crap folder to the external drive.<\/li>\n    <li>Move everything in My Documents to the external drive.<\/li>\n    <li>Empty the trash bin.<\/li>\n    <li>Run <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ccleaner.com\/\">CCleaner<\/a>.<\/li>\n    <li>Fire up your paid version of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.diskeeper.com\/defrag.asp\">Diskeeper<\/a> (it&#8217;s worth it, I promise: and I <em>hate<\/em> paying for software). Set up a boot-time defrag, and have it get the paging file and MFT as well.<\/li>\n    <li>Move everything back. Or, realize that you don&#8217;t need 3\/4 of it and <em>don&#8217;t<\/em> move it back.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Warning: I&#8217;m somewhat concerned that some things might not take well to being moved around, like my iTunes Library. I&#8217;m posting this as I&#8217;m finishing up copying everything over, so it&#8217;s possible that this isn&#8217;t going to work out as I planned.
