By &#8220;lately&#8221; I mean the past few years.\u00a0 For example, who would ever think that:<\/p>\n<ul>\n    <li>NASA would spend $8 million to discover just how often passenger airliners almost collide, and then <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2007\/TRAVEL\/10\/22\/nasa.air.safety.ap\/index.html\">refuse to release the results<\/a> to as to not alarm people.<\/li>\n    <li>Our President would <a href=\"http:\/\/ap.google.com\/article\/ALeqM5j057jBReERcsF-FcZRSWe0h1gaXQD8SB7EFG3\">veto a children&#8217;s health care plan<\/a> and say he did it to show that he was still relevant.<\/li>\n    <li>Our Vice President would almost <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2007\/10\/04\/AR2007100402281.html\">always<\/a> be in &#8220;an undisclosed location&#8221; and declare that he&#8217;s not bound by rules for the executive <em>or<\/em> legislative branch.<\/li>\n    <li>Our Vice President would <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/cgi-bin\/article.cgi?f=\/c\/a\/2006\/02\/26\/MNGEEHCNJ41.DTL\">shoot someone in the face<\/a>.<\/li>\n    <li>One of the defense companies in Iraq would constantly get itself into <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/politicsNews\/idUSN2245858720071022\">deeper and deeper<\/a> trouble.<\/li>\n    <li>People would begin <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/cgi-bin\/article.cgi?f=\/c\/a\/2007\/10\/22\/MNT1SU52D.DTL&#038;tsp=1\">shooting each other<\/a> over a football game.<\/li>\n    <li>A conservative Senator would be <a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/templates\/story\/story.php?storyId=15454580\">arrested<\/a> for soliciting gay prostitutes in an airport bathroom, and accidentally plead guilty.<\/li>\n    <li>Colbert, a &#8220;fake new anchor,&#8221; would <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2007\/10\/21\/AR2007102100613.html\">announce his candidacy<\/a> for President, and solicit the aforementioned conservative senator as his running mate, and articles would wonder whether or not he was being serious.<\/li>\n    <li>A <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/servlet\/story\/LAC.20071022.POTTER22\/TPStory\/Entertainment\">fictional character<\/a> would be outed as a homosexual, causing worldwide controversy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Really, I&#8217;m not sure <em>anything<\/em> could hit the news and not surprise me these days?<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The news lately has been pretty surreal.
