I dragged my parents to see the Reader. It's quite impressive!

I leave for Africa tomorrow morning. (Eek!)

And you're right--if they come out around $200, it probably will be one of those things you just have to have.

If these are released at the expected price, I will NOT be able to resist. I have a hard enough time saying no to little notebooks as it is. Even though I probably have little use for one.

While I will admit that I have too many machines (I would sell off my ThinkPad T60 if I could), the purpose of buying an eee would be more to tinker and experiment with. I can see it being usable as a small digital notebook or a MythTV unit with the appropriate USB hookup, and I mostly just want my hands on one to see what they could do with $199 in parts.

I've had my eyes on the Sony Reader for some time now. That screen you're looking at is an e-ink display. Awesome contrast no power to maintain image = :D I'm not sure I could justify the $260 price either, but there is an offer for 100 classic books if you buy one in the next month or so...maybe I can ask for one for my birthday or something.

If that intrigues you, check out the Polymer Vision "Readius" at their website. Think foldable screen, EDGE-enabled portable reading device. T-Mobile's thinking about bringing it out here in the States...

Also, how is Africa? :D

(I am so glad someone else finally posted something!)

With the name "Asus eee," I seriously thought at first that you had just banged on the keyboard. It's a neat idea, although I wonder about the software aspect of it, which I think could make or break it.

(Don't you have enough computers?)

In unrelated news, but up your alley, I was in Best Buy today and they had the 'Sony Reader.' (Apparently all it's called?) I only played with it for a minute, but the screen is amazing. I initially thought it was a dummy unit where they just printed out the text and glued it on. But it was real. It's quite spiffy, and I was tempted to buy it, but it was $260... Which exceeds my quota for frivolous spending. ;)
