A bizarre typographical error on my part got Apache into an infinite redirection loop. For reasons I don’t yet understand, its maximum execution timeout never kicked in; the server got up to almost triple-digit load averages, and, understandably, things stopped working. It was down for a while before I realized what was going on and restarted Apache.

All’s humming along smoothly now.
